Touching the Lives of Thousands
in Need!
Amazon Promise is a U.S.-based, non-profit organization founded to provide desperately needed medical and dental care to remote populations living in the Upper Amazon Basin of Northeastern Peru. Our Peruvian operations are headquartered in the jungle city of Iquitos where we provide medical services, cervical cancer screening and treatment, and health education to its residents and neighboring Belen. Additionally, since 1993 we have conducted routine medical outreach clinics, training, and education in 32 remote mestizo and indigenous communities. Programs to install rainwater catchment systems for clean water, and composting toilets for improved sanitation in the remote communities we serve began in 2013. Our Iquitos office is open throughout the year to receive patients arriving from remote jungle communities, and provide follow-up and ongoing medical care to those in need.
Our volunteers form the backbone of our organization. Medical, dental and non-medical volunteers work alongside our seasoned American and Peruvian staff to serve the needs of thousands of people each year.

Dental ProgramDentistry is an important part of Amazon Promise’s work in Peru. We're always looking for dentists and dental student volunteers to join our Promise Medical Teams.
Traditional MedicineDuring our health campaigns and clinics in remote indigenous and mestizo communities, Amazon Promise offers treatments to patients that combine western and traditional medicine. We also provide education on the use of local medicinal plants.
Support Our Ongoing Work in BelenLocated adjacent to Iquitos, Belén is a sprawling river community of some 74,000 people who lack the most basic amenities required for human health. Outdoor defecation, piles of rotting trash and drinking water contamination are rife. Most children are malnourished. Living conditions are beyond comprehension. The prevalence of many diseases is extremely high. Maternal and infant mortality rates are also high.

Family PlanningAccess to family planning is essential to securing the well-being and autonomy of women in developing communities. Family planning is one of the most powerful tools we can use to interrupt the cycle of grinding poverty that oppresses women and limits their life choices. Incorporating family planning into basic health care services improves maternal and child health and welfare while also conserving natural resources.
Clean Water Is Everyone’s RightThe people in the Amazon suffer from chronic parasitic infestations, and thousands of children die each year from diarrhea caused by contaminated river water. Over 90% of diarrheal death is caused by unsafe water, poor sanitation and insufficient hygiene.
Cervical Cancer Screening and TreatmentCervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in Peru among women aged 15 to 44 who live in low resource areas, including the Peruvian Amazon. Although preventive screening is inexpensive and available through the Ministry of Health, the majority of women have never been screened. Of the women who are screened and found to have cervical dysplasia or cervical cancer, many never receive treatment and succumb to this disease that is highly treatable in its earliest stages.
